The city of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece, is the second largest city in the country. It is a city that is completely different from Athens, and is one that is very beautiful and peaceful. The city was actually destroyed by fire in 1917, and then suffered an earthquake in the late 1970s. However, despite these events, there are still a number of ancient sites and buildings that visitors to the city can admire.

Thessaloniki is an ideal base from which to venture out and explore more of the north region of Greece. There are many nearby beaches that are ideal for the summer season, yet Thessaloniki is also a city that can be visited throughout the year. There are a range of museums around the city, as well as some fine theatres and churches that are well worth visiting.
