ATTICA / SARONIC GULF HOTELS - ATHENS LOUTRAKI HYDRA SPETSES HOTELS
The region of Attica and the Argo Saronic Gulf Islands are an ideal
choice for your holidays to Greece, combining the ancient and modern
city of Athens, along with its unique history and natural
beauty. Attica makes up the region of the block of mainland that
connects the Peloponnese with Central Greece. It includes the famous
region of Sounion, situated in the southern part of the peninsula,
and the regions of Marathon and Kalamos in the north. The largest
Greek port of Piraeus is also located within Attica, and from here
one can travel onwards to many of the Greek Islands.
The islands that form the group known as the Saronic Gulf
Islands are Aegina, Hydra, Poros, Agistri and Spetses. These
islands are conveniently located close to Athens and make delightful
daytrips. The islands have immense natural beauty, sandy beaches,
entertaining nightlife and a range of sights and places to visit.
Aegina is the largest of the islands, and was in fact the first
capital city of the newly freed Greece in 1828. It has maintained
its traditional looks and charm and is always a popular island
to visit by those who have arrived in Athens and are looking for
a quick escape to an island.
Poros is an island situated just a short distance from the mainland
and is one of the less famous islands but one definitely worth visiting.
It is home to the Temple of Poseidon and is an island
that is easily accessible. Agistri is a very small island just to
the west of Aegina, and is one that has some great beaches. It makes
a fantastic day trip from Athens and is popular with both locals
and foreigners. The island of Spetses is actually situated under
the south of the Peloponnese and is a charming and picturesque island.
Lastly is the island of Hydra, a highly cosmopolitan island. This
island is one of extreme beauty and charm, and has actually banned
cars on the island, so be prepared to use those leg muscles a little.
