Halkidiki is situated just southeast of the city of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece, and is recognised by its strange and unique shape – that of a three fingered hand. This region of North Greece is a very beautiful and inspiring one, that offers a great choice of the beaches, especially important during the summer months.

The three peninsulas that make up this “three fingered hand” are Agion Oros (meaning Holy Mountain), which is the most eastern point. In the middle is the peninsula of Sithonia, and to the west is that of Kassandra.

Mount Athos on the eastern peninsula of Agion Oros is a stunning sight to visit, and is one that is ruled by the monks of the many monasteries located here. The Kassandra peninsula is the most popular of the three and is a favourite destination in north Greece from visitors from all over Europe. It is also closest to the Thessaloniki airport than the other two peninsulas. Finally is the middle peninsula of Sithonia. It is a very beautiful region, but one that has not developed a successful tourism infrastructure. However, omit it from your travels at your peril, as it is a stunning region, filled with forests, and is also home to some of the best beaches in Greece, which are located on the eastern coast of the peninsula.
